Located half way between Aix and Oléron Islands, Fort Boyard was initially built to protect the harbours of Aix and Rochefort against British attacks.
Fort Boyard is oval-shaped, 68 m long, 32 m wide and 20 m high and its construction was a technical prowess !
Its construction lasted 30 years and was completed in 1859 but it became obsolete even before it was finished thanks to advances in gun technology.
Then, it was used as a military prison and was abandoned at the beginning of the 20th century.
It was restored and is now the setting of a very famous TV game show : "Fort Boyard".
Fort Boyard can't be visited but cruises will take you round this impressive stone vessel.
